This year, the Doctor Who holiday minisode serves as a prequel of sorts for the full holiday episode.
Within, we see that the Doctor has spent much time away from the adventuring life, just chilling, retired in Victorian London. It will be this, much fun-drained seeming Doctor who will need to be brought back into the fray by a new companion, who will be – contrary to all the previous hints given – exactly the same thing as all the previous major companions since the 2005 relaunch, a pretty girl from the UK.
This one is relatively spoiler free, as it doesn’t really get into the plot of the episode or anything that would at all shocking.
That trailer mentioned at the end obviously contains some plot spoilers for the holiday episode. You can watch it here:
Certainly one of the more strange of the Doctor’s enemies.
It’ll be nice to see the Doctor shift back to a more interesting place as a character. His time with Amy and Rory had left him oddly immature and overly impetuous. With a new companion he will return to his role as the guide of the adventure (and the smartest person on the TARDIS again, at least when River isn’t around).
We have this synopsis of the episopde:
Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara, his new companion, this year’s Christmas Special is called The Snowmen and follows their adventures as they battle the villainous Doctor Simeon (Richard E Grant) and his army of sinister snowmen.
Here are some production stills from the upcoming episode:
The second half of the series kicks off in the new year, but in between we’ll have the holiday episode, The Snowmen, which is slated to air on December 25, 2012. A Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special will also arrive sometime in 2013, but the series will be on hiatus after that until Fall 2014, when series 8 is scheduled to be split across the new year, similar to this season.
