Prometheus Blu-ray gets official

Prometheus was one of the most anticipated genre films of the year for several reasons.

Nobody was quite sure if it was indeed a prequel to Alien, a reinvention, or as director Ridley Scott himself said, a return to the Alien universe, but it was certainly exciting to speculate from watching the trailers.

Although many were disappointed with the film, it definitely has its fans, and some who didn’t like the story were nevertheless blown away by Ridley’s filmmaking technique. Now official news of the Prometheus Blu-ray has hit, and there will indeed be two versions of the film, a regular 2-disc edition and a 4-disc special collector’s edition.

The 4 disc version has the film in 2D and 3D , along with seven hours of special features, including commentaries from Scott, screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, deleted scenes, an alternate opening and ending, and five featurettes. Playing on the advance hype of the film, this Blu-ray also promises that “questions will be answered.”

On both Collider and The Playlist, Scott also talked about returning to sci-fi, and making the movie in 3D with the state of the art RED camera. The RED is a hi-def digital camera, and with film going out of business, it will probably be the camera of choice in the future.

As Scott said, Prometheus was his first trip back into science fiction in thirty years, “and because it’s science fiction, I have to do 3D, and the RED is the only choice. I’d never done 3D before, I’d never done RED before, and I [hadn’t] done digital before. I thought I was a film man. I like things sharp and crisp. I went to a demonstration at the RED studios where they showed me the capability of how the RED can capture the smallest of light sources and still retain its sharpness and density. I was blown away.”

One question that can’t be answered yet is whether Prometheus will grow into a classic years down the road, like Blade Runner’s resurrection after its theatrical run. Only time will tell, I suppose. In the meantime, Prometheus will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on October 9. Be sure to check out the full content breakdown below:
