Pond Life was not the only prequel to the first episode of the new Doctor Who season.
iTunes users who subscribed to season 7 of Doctor Who were able to access an additional prequel to The Asylum of the Daleks before it aired on Saturday. Now, it’s been made available online.
The brief scene shows how The Doctor knew to find Darla von Karlsen out on the historic Dalek homeworld at the beginning of the episode:
The hooded messenger character is interesting, and The Doctor seems to know something of the creature’s nature, so they are part of the story-world in some way, not just a one-off sending. It’ll be interesting if the race (?) gets developed further in later episodes. Perhaps he frequently gets calls for help in his dreams like this, and we just don’t normally see it, since it’s not externally visible.
This weekend was also big for Dopctor Who for another reason. Last season’s turning-point episode, The Doctor’s Wife, won the Hugo award in the category of best dramatic fiction, short form. Of course, if you were watching online, you may have missed it.
BBC One has also released this behind-the-scenes featurette for The Asylum of the Daleks. There are lots of great shots of Daleks and the special effects used in the episode, including a Dalek filled with black powder. There are some spoilers if you haven’t seen the episode yet.
Finally, you can also check out some stills from the upcoming second episode, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.
You can find more like that here.
The new season of Doctor Who has begun. Episodes air on Saturday evenings on BBC One and BBC America.
