There have been innumerable reports in the last several years about the third Ghostbusters movie, which has been in development for decades now. Dan Aykroyd really wants to do one more go around, Sony is also excited about another ‘Busters flick, but Billy Murray and Rick Moranis don’t want to come back.
This isn’t gong to stop Aykroyd, who wants to hand over the torch to a bunch of new upstarts. And with female comedy doing so well these days, there’s speculation the next ‘Busters could be an all femme affair.
Billy Murray’s been asked about this already, and if he had to pick a female ‘Busters cast, he told CNN, “Melissa McCarthy would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny. God, she’s funny! I like this Linda Cardellini (Mad Men, Freaks and Geeks) a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”
This little piece of fantasy movie making comes on the heels of CNN reporting that Sony wants to make a movie with a female superhero, so perhaps an all female Ghostbusters is wishful thinking on everyone’s part rather than an actual plan at Sony, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea. After all, the characters in Alien were not gender specific in the screenplay, and when Ripley was cast as a woman, Sigourney Weaver became a memorable hero.
