Sony, out of nowhere, wants to be 2nd place in tablets

Samsung has the Galaxy Tab, Motorola has the Xoom, Asus has a few on the way, and yet the company that says it can go all the way up to knocking on the iPad’s door…is Sony?

To date, Sony has barely even talked about the tablet market. It hasn’t announced any serious plans to bring out an iPad competitor, so recent comments from company CEO Sir Howard Stringer seem arrogant at best.

“For sure iPad is the king of tablets. But what is the second, what is the third? Who is taking the second position? That is our focus, We would like to really take the number two position in a year,” said Stringer in an interview with Reuters.

Still unclear is whether a Sony-branded tablet would come from Sony’s consumer electronics label or from its mobile division, Sony Ericsson.

The company has fully embraced Android for its smartphone offerings, so any sort of Sony tablet would likely run on Google’s mobile platform. It would also probably focus heavily on games, one of Sony’s biggest departments.

While no one is expected to dethrone Apple this year, there is already heated competition for the second place slot. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is selling pretty well and has become the most noteworthy Android tablet. But it may have come out a bit too soon, as its version of Android will become outdated by the end of the year.

Motorola’s Xoom tablet is where most of the eyes are now, as it’ll be the first to run on Android 3.0, also known as “Honeycomb,” which Google has said will be the version of its operating system that is best suited for tablet devices. [[Sony]]
