Sunnyvale (CA) – AMD today announced that the 50 millionth graphics chip for the Nintendo Wii was shipped today. And while it seems that not quite 50 million Wiis have shipped yet, the console is on track to break the barrier within less than 40 months after launch.
Code-named Hollywood, the graphics chip was designed by AMD and is manufactured on a 90 nm process. Few details about the chip are known besides some data indicating it’s a two-chip package consisting of an ARM926-based I/O component as well as the actual GPU with embedded DRAM.
AMD’s ATI division is the clear winner in the current graphics chip game console race by supplying the graphics core for both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. In the U.S. alone, the Wii has sold 18.4 million units, according to NPD, and the Xbox 360 14.2 million. The PS3, which integrates an Nvidia-designed chip has sold 7.0 million units in the U.S. so far.
