FCC targets wireless industry in ’empowerment’ probe

San Francisco (CA) – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has confirmed plans to hold a public meeting aimed at scrutinizing the wireless industry. An FCC spokesperson told TG Daily that the probe will include three separate presentations, including one session dedicated to the ’empowerment’ of American consumers.

“The Commission will consider a Notice of Inquiry that seeks comment on whether there are opportunities to protect and empower American consumers by ensuring sufficient access to relevant information about communications services,” the FCC explained in an official statement.

The agency is also expected to review various factors meant to encourage wireless innovation and “identify concrete steps” to encourage further investment. Finally, the FCC is slated to examine information for the next annual report to Congress on the status of competition in the mobile wireless market.

As TG Daily previously reported, the federal government has made a salient effort to step up its scrutiny of the wireless industy.

For example, the FCC recently initiated an informal investigation into Apple’s rejection of Google’s iPhone voice application.

In addition, the Department of Justice (DoJ) launched a wide-ranging review of major telecommunications companies over possible anti-trust violations, while four senators informed the FCC of their intention to investigate wireless exclusivity agreements.
