The loss is due to a net charge of $119.1 million for the quarter because of defective die and packing chips.
Nvidia reckoned that without this charge it would have made a net profit of $37.7 million, compared with $74.5 million in the same period a year before. But it cannot recreate the past and the defective chips have dented its business.
Jen-Hsun Huang sought to put a bright light on his business in a prepared statement. He said: “Nvidia’s business is recovering. Product demand is improving, and our strategic investments are leading to new growth.”
He said that “meaningful amounts” of its two newest products shipped in the quarter – those are Tesla, a general purpose graphics processor and Tegra, its so-called “computer-on-a-chip”.
The company said it expected revenues in the third quarter ending October 25th next to be up by five to seven percent over the second quarter.
