After announcing last week that it planned to hire 6,000 employees this year, Google has received a few applications – 75,000, to be precise.
Alan Eustace, senior VP for engineering and research, said that 2011 would be the biggest hiring year in the company’s history.
Last September, an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data by the TechAmerica Foundation showed that after a year of shedding jobs, the tech industry as a whole was hiring again.
“We’re looking for top talent — across the board and around the globe — and we’ll hire as many smart, creative people as we can to tackle some of the toughest challenges in computer science: like building a web-based operating system from scratch, instantly searching an index of more than 100 million gigabytes and even developing cars that drive themselves,” he said
But Google might also want to think about hiring a few more boys for the post-room, with an unprecedented 75,000 resumes arriving in the mail this week – some 15 percent more than its previous record, in May 2007.
The company currently has around 24,400 staff. According to Fortune, it’s the fourth best place in the US to work – not quite as delightful as in 2007 and 2008 when it topped the charts, but still better than cleaning the drains.
Back in November, the company gave all its employees a ten percent raise along with a $1,000 bonus. It’s worried about a gradual drain of staff away to rivals such as Facebook and potentially-lucrative start-ups.
