Facebook’s acquiring Push Pop Press, which specializes in interactive e-books for Apple’s iPad and iPhone.
Push Pop Press is best known as the publisher of Our Choice, an interactive book about the climate crisis by former vice president Al Gore, designed for the iPhone and iPad.
The company’s publishing platform includes an editor, publishing and hosting service and a document format which the company originally intended to open up to external publishers.
But, say the companies, the acquisition doesn’t mean that Facebook’s getting into the online publishing business itself. Rather, it seems, it wants to get hold of the company’s expertise, particularly in the Apple platform. Facebook’s been rumored for some time to be working on an iPad app, and both of Push Pop’s founders are ex-Apple staffers.
“Although Facebook isn’t planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories,” say Push Pop co-founders Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris.
“With millions of people publishing to Facebook each day, we think it’s going to be a great home for Push Pop Press.”
The company won’t produce any more titles, but will continue to market Our Choice, with profits to be donated to Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project campaign group.
