Amazon has announced a sweet new feature for its e-reader.
Dubbed Kindle Library Lending, the addition will allow users to “borrow” e-books from over 11,000 libraries in the United States.
The “borrowed” e-book can be read on a Kindle, or on the Android, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, PC, Mac, BlackBerry or Windows Phone using the Kindle app.
While reading, users can make annotations and add bookmarks into loaned books.
If they choose to purchase the book or borrow it again, all of their annotations will be re-appear – much like a book with pencil in the margins.
“We’re doing a little something extra here. [Because] normally, making margin notes in library books is a big no-no,” explained Amazon exec Jay Marine.
“But we’re extending our Whispersync technology so that you can highlight and add margin notes to Kindle books you check out from your local library. Your notes will not show up when the next patron checks out the book. “
Kindle Library Lending will be available later this year for Kindle and free Kindle app users.
