Apple iPhone 4 customers can now claim the princely sum of $15 in compensation, following the settlement of a lawsuit over the phone’s ‘antennagate’ reception problems.
The iphone4settlement website is now live, and users have until August 28 to make a claim. The deal is intended to settle 18 different lawsuits, and is open to anyone who bought an iPhone 4 before February 17 this year – long after the problems were widely known about.
“To be eligible for the cash payment, you must have: (a) experienced antenna or reception issues; (b) been unable to return your iPhone 4 without incurring any costs; (c) been unwilling to use a case or free bumper for your iPhone 4; and (d) completed certain troubleshooting steps or are unable to complete the troubleshooting steps because you no longer own your iPhone,” says Apple.
However, there’ll still be quite a wait for the cash. The class action settlement which led to the layout is to go through another hearing in mid-July, and ‘there may be appeals’, says Apple, which could take up to a year. “Please be patient,” it says.
The case dates back to 2010, when buyers of the new phone started complaining that they were experiencing poor signal quality and dropped calls; Apple said it was the way people were holding it that was at fault. Nevertheless, nearly a quarter of iPhone 4 users said they were having difficulties with the antenna.
Apple eventually offered users a free bumper designed to fix the problem; those who accepted are still entitled to the cash.
