The leading games retailer in the US is continuing to realize it needs to adapt to the changing world of the video game medium.
Earlier this year, it began buying and selling used gadgets like the iPod Touch, and now Gamestop has begun selling Android tablets – marketing them as ‘gaming tablets.’
200 of the company’s retail locations are testing the new product offering, which includes Samsung’s 10-inch Galaxy Tab, two Acer Iconia models, and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer.
The Acer is likely to appeal to the budget-conscious gamers while the Galaxy Tab is designed for the high-end game enthusiast.
To further boost their potential as game devices, the Gamestop version of each tablet includes the following games pre-installed:
Dead Space, Re-Load, Sonic CD, Monster Madness, Riptide GP, and Cordy.
They also all come loaded with the Kongregate Arcade App, which is a digital download platform for Android focused on gaming. Kongregate is owned by Gamestop.
Gamestop is working fervently to stay on top of a market that is quickly turning away from traditional brick-and-mortar distribution. The retailer sells downloadable content cards, gift cards for digital services like Facebook Credits and Nintendo Points, and subscriptions to Kongregate.
It remains to be seen if the retailer can keep its momentum during this entertainment shift, but it’s certainly trying.
