Honoring excellence in the mobile app arts, Angry Birds and Facebook are among the inaugural winners of the so-called Appy Awards.
Presented at a ceremony in London last night, hosted by local celebrity Richard Hammond, the winners were entirely selected by open voting from the public.
Surprising no one, the winner for best gaming app was Angry Birds, the breakout sensation that turned Rovio from a virtually nonexistent company to a household name.
Meanwhile, Facebook was the perhaps dubious distinction of being the best “time waster.” It was one of several free apps that took home some of the top honors.
Skype won for video and text chatting. The dedicated Ebay Fashion app took the award for the category of best fashion-related app, and Photoshop took the photography award.
Google came in with a win in the best “time saver” category, thanks to the helpfulness of Google Maps, while TripAdvisor’s app won in the travel category. Amazon won the “lifestyle” award, interestingly enough, and the remaining two awards went to apps largely used in the UK – Spotify, a music streaming service, won for best music app, and Sky Sports News took the title of best sports app.
