It seems as if Microsoft has finally realized that embracing the modding community is likely to help increase sales of the already popular Xbox 360 Kinect 3D motion controller.
That’s right – Redmond is planning to “open up” the Kinect, thereby allowing both amateur and professional software devs to experiment with the versatile technology.
As such, the company is slated to release a software development kit (SDK) in the spring, with a commercial version scheduled for sometime in the near future.
“As breakthrough technologies like these reach scale, the resulting creativity and invention will open up a whole new world of possibilities for computing,” explained Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer.
Mundie added that the SDK could help devs take the Kinect and related apps to the next level.
“We think we’ll see a huge explosion in interest…. We’ll [certainly] welcome that and support it.”
