Pioneer is developing a heads up display (HUD) for vehicles that taps advanced GPS-based features in current-gen smartphones.
According to Martyn Williams of IDG News, the HUD utilizes a laser to display bright, high-contrast, full-color images on a screen mounted above the dashboard.
As you can see in the video, a prototype model of the HUD was successfully hooked up to an Android-based phone at Ceatec in Japan.
It displayed a navigation map on the left-hand side, along with an animated Android robot on the right-hand side that passed on real-time information to the “driver.”
Cool, eh? Want one?
Well, you may not have to wait all that long for the futuristic HUD, as Pioneer hopes to have a commercial model available sometime in 2012.
