Taipei, Taiwan – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has apologised to hundreds of staff laid off in the last six months and asked them to come back to work.
TSMC Chairman Morris Chang described the lay-offs as ‘regrettable actions’ which were forced on the company by the economic downturn, adding that TSMC had ‘failed to show them appropriate respect’ and had not appreciated the difficulty of them finding new jobs.
“Although the economic crisis has not passed, we are encouraged to see that the company’s revenues are improving. The second quarter is much better than the first quarter, and the worst is over,” said Chang, adding that the company had now asked its former employees to return to work at the beginning of next month.
