Bethesda preps Fallout 3 DLC for PS3, confirms Mothership Zeta

Chicago (IL) – Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 3 downloadable content (DLC) will be available for the PS3 over the next few months. Operation: Anchorage is expected to debut in late June, followed by the release of The Pitt and Broken Steel some 4-6 weeks apart.

The company also announced the development of two new DLCs for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC:

  • Point Lookout – Players are granted the opportunity to explore a massive swampland sector.
  • Mothership Zeta – Players attempt to survive a horrific alien abduction.

Point Lookout will be available in late June for the Xbox 360 and PC platforms at a cost of 800 points or $10. However, PS3 owners will only be able to obtain the title after the release of the first three DLCs. Mothership Zeta, which is expected to cost a similar amount, is slated for the Xbox 360 and PC in late July. Unsurprisingly, the content will only be available to PS3 users after the arrival of Point Lookout.

Finally, Bethesda is preparing a Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition for October 2009. The title will include the original game plus all five add-ons for $60 (Xbox 360/PS3) and $50 (PCs).

Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 200 years after a nuclear war devastates the virtual world. The protagonist is an inhabitant of Vault 101, a shelter designed to protect survivors from dangerous fallout. After a short training session, the player leaves the vault and travels through the ruins of Washington, DC.

Game designers Jeff Browne and Alan Nanes explained that the Broken Steel DLC was designed to “begin a new chapter” in the saga.

“Once an author puts the last piece of punctuation on the final sentence of his creation, the story is traditionally over,” the designers wrote in a blog post. “However, with our latest downloadable content project, we were determined to break with this tradition by taking the ending of Fallout 3 beyond that epic moment in the purifier and beginning a new chapter in the saga of the Dweller from Vault 101. We had to revisit old locations and characters, change plot elements and yet still keep the tone and consistency accurate while at the same time provide an entertaining and rewarding experience for the player.”
