Apple has announced the download of its one billionth application.
The program, created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. The lucky Mulcahey will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate, a sleek iPod touch and a shiny new MacBook Pro.
“The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and we’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.”
Apple’s application store offers more than iPhone and Ipod 35,000 programs to consumers in 77 countries. The company is expected to release its iPhone OS 3.0 software update this summer, which will provide developers with over 1,000 new APIs enabling in-app purchases, peer-to-peer connections and push notifications.
The upgraded OS will also add over 100 features, including copy and paste, advanced search, landscape keyboard, MMS support and expanded parental controls for apps, TV shows and movies.
