Have you ever thought about dialing the ninth chevron and visiting Destiny and her crew?
Well, too bad, because SyFy is unceremoniously pulling the plug on Stargate Universe forever.
Yes, the second half of season 2 should air next spring, but a much-anticipated third season will not be filmed.
Unfortunately, we’ll never get to find out what happened to Gaius Balter wannabe Nicholas Rush, the confused Colonel Everett Young (hello William “Bill” Adama), the annoying Chloe Armstrong (no, she wasn’t *that* hot), and nerd extraordinaire Eli Wallace.
Frankly, I’m kind of disappointed that SyFy is canceling SG Universe.
Now, I know that a lot of people had issues with the first season, and yes, the writers were certainly trying to emulate BSG a little too much, but still.
I mean, couldn’t the bean counters have waited to see how the second season performed before pulling the plug?
Oh, wait, that would definitely be asking too much from the mercenary folks who buried Caprica without shedding a single tear.
OK, so, what do we have left in terms of “hardcore” on SyFy?
Not much. Yeah, sure, there is Warehouse 13, Haven, Eureka and Being Human.
But as Tim Surette of TV.com points out, those are all “Earth-bound shows” that fail to target the same audience as Caprica, Battlestar Galactica, and the Stargate franchise.
“The network continues to make its transition to bringing in a broader audience,” writes Surette.
“And I guess [for SyFy] that means elbowing out the more hardcore sci-fi programs.”
Fair enough.
But why do core fans like us always have to suffer the consequences of hyperactive capitalism and clueless execs who do little more than stifle creativity?
Seriously, how many more shows will we be forced to eulogize? Probably too many, I fear.
Then again, I still haven’t managed to get over the demise of Odyssey 5 and Joss Whedon’s Firefly.
