In the wake of Transformers, there have been a number of movies that have tried to jump on the giant robot bandwagon, and big robots that fly and smash things is a tradition that goes back decades. Robotech has been one such franchise that has been in the works to be revived for years now, and now reports are coming in that Sony has taken over the rights.
Originally a Robotech movie was going to be made at Warner Brothers with Tobey Maguire producing (and could make a good lead for it as well.) Now Variety tells us that Sony is hoping to get a Robotech movie set up quickly, and that they’re going for “an Independence Day meets Star Wars vibe.”
Mark Gordon will be writing the screenplay, and his past credits include G.I. Joe and 300, so we’re willing to bet ‘Tech will have the feel of those movies as well.
As producer Mark Canton told Variety, “Robotech is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”
So while Transformers are the still the big robot kings, we wouldn’t be surprised if Robotech becomes a new cinematic robot force if the people making the movie play their cards right.
