Paramount Pictures has posted the first full-length trailer for its upcoming supernatural adventure film, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Hansel and Gretel, the characters from the classic fairytale, have grown up to become witch hunters with acrobatic skills, and lots of great heavy hardware. On this hunt, they find more than they expected, facing down a particularly strong coven which has been snatching children from a small village.
Fairytales have been infecting the zeitgeist lately, appearing en mass on television and at the theater. While I’d prefer more original stories, it’s perfectly fine with me to see more fairytale-based stories. Essentially the equivalent of super hero stories from the Victorian era, there is so much lore to reinterpret, and, like super hero stories, they could remake these stories until the end of time. There will always be new ways of looking at the tales, as opposed to readapting a modern novel, which runs low on variation quickly and almost always generates complaints when the source material is stretched.
The official, and very short synopsis of the film is thus:
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters takes place 15 years after the siblings’ incident at the gingerbread house. The two are now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Derek Mears, and Thomas Mann, hits theaters on January 11th, 2013.
