Personally, I have my doubts about the long-term viability of the recently announced Android-powered Ouya game console.
Nevertheless, Ouya has managed to rake in a staggering $7,914,776 on KickStarter, with the campaign officially ending on Thursday Aug 9, at 1:00am EDT.
Clearly, there are a lot of people out there who are very excited about the prospect of a cheap Android gaming system, as the current generation of consoles – Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii – continues to stagnate.
It probably also helps that Ouya is fully capable of peforming tasks other than running native Android games, such as streaming audio, video and logging on to OnLive.
As noted above, the Kickstarter campaign for the Ouya console ends tonight. In the meantime, a few new details have surfaced, including that the system will be capable of supporting up to four game controllers.
The controllers will be matched to the color of the console you purchased, with the Ouya crew confirming: “And -because we know you’ll ask – if you’ve got your heart set on the limited edition version, we’ll make sure that the controllers are matched.”
Ouya is also apparently in talks with Namco Bandai, coders of the legendary Pac-Man, Ridge Racer and Tekken. A possible partnership would likely see such classic video games ported to the Android-powered console.
It should be noted that Ouya also supports the Plex media player along with XBMC.
