Jaden Smith has been in several major movies already, including Karate Kid and The Pursuit of Happiness.
And now Jaden and his father, Will Smith, will be starring in a new M. Night Shyamalan flick called After Earth. Although little was initially known about the post-apocalyptic film, details are finally surfacing ahead of Comic-Con, including a full plot synopsis that will be expanded on during an in-depth panel on the subject.
The movie certainly sounds interesting, and the plot reads like there will be much more screen time for Jaden than for Will Smith.
Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, unless you go to see the movie expecting it to be focused on the senior Smith.
The teaser synopsis reads as follows: “In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith).
“When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”
It’s probably also worth noting that M. Night Shyamalan is only directing and didn’t actually penAfter Earth. However, he did get to tweak the script just a bit, although the majority of the script was written by Gary Whitta, who wrote The Book of Eli. Another scriptwriter named Stephen Gaghan was apparently brought in to finish things up.
