The CW has revealed the first image of Oliver Queen’s Green Arrow costume from its upcoming dramatic television serial Arrow – which is loosely based on Green Arrow from DC Comics.
The original Green Arrow costume was supposed to be a bit reminiscent of the green, huntsman’s outfit in which Robin Hood is usually depicted, as the story shares some clear themes as well as a basic premise – a young man with lots of resources uses a bow to fight for the downtrodden.
This costume doesn’t scream “Robin Hood”, but perhaps it need not. The leather hoodie does seem a bit more like what a person would actually wear if they wanted to go out fighting crime with a bow at night, which reflects the more realistic feel that the Arrow showrunners are going for.
This is not a world of superheroes, as Smallville turned out to be. In fact, contrary to our expectations, this show will have only a “core idea” in common with Smallville.
“When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero,” explained showrunner David Nutter. “Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”
Attwood is a veteran Hollywood costume designer, responsible for the costumes in such films as Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland, and the 2001 Planet of the Apes.
No production or release details have yet been announced for Arrow, but from the looks of it, we’ll likely see the first episode during the 2012 pilot season.
