AMC Theaters has confirmed that it will be offering exclusive special edition glasses for the 3D iteration of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
The glasses are apparently stylized to look like Anakin’s pod-racer goggles, and everyone who buys a ticket to the new edition of the film on opening weekend February (10-12) 2012 will be getting a pair.
Along with the glasses, each customer will also receive a Hasbro Star Wars Fighter Pod toy.
In addition, there are ten AMC theaters which have been chosen to hold special premier party events, at which audience members can have their faces painted like Darth Maul, play with some new LEGO toys, get photos with some actors in character costume, and play a demo of the upcoming Kinect Star Wars video game.
The premier party event will be held in the following theaters:
- Atlanta: AMC Southlake 24
- Boston: AMC Loews Liberty Tree Mall 20
- Chicago: AMC South Barrington 30
- Denver: AMC Highlands Ranch 24
- Los Angeles: AMC Tustin 14 at The District
- AMC Ontario Mills 30
- New York: AMC Empire 25
- AMC Garden State 16
- Phoenix: AMC Mesa Grand 24
- San Francisco: AMC Emeryville Bay Street 16
All other AMC theaters will offer just the toy and special edition glasses.
The whole thing is being marketed to children, which, frankly, is a bit mysterious to me. I mean, I know plenty of adults who would be excited to get special 3D glasses and a pod-racer. Then again, collectors and children alike are going to want to see this film at AMC for the free merchandise, so I’ll be making sure to see it at any other theater to avoid the crowds.
Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D will hit theaters February 10, 2012.
