Calling it the world’s largest 3D TV, LG plans to showcase an 84-inch “Ultra Definition” set at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show.
“We are bringing together all our Smart TV and 3D knowledge in the 3D UD TV in order to demonstrate to the CES audience that LG is committed to being the world’s leading brand for immersive home entertainment in 2012 and beyond,” said LG Home Entertainment CEO Havis Kwon.
The company first showed off an 84-inch 3D display in 2010 but at the time it was more of a conceptual model and not ready for consumers.
This one will be. Though LG did not reveal any pricing information yet, this 3D monstrosity will be sold to the masses – or at least to those with enough money and space to warrant getting one.
Also on display at CES will be a 55-inch OLED TV panel, which the company says is also the largest in the world.
LG has struggled to grab a strong foothold in the advanced TV market, largely because it has focused on hardware and not software – it cannot compete with the Internet apps and built-in TV operating systems of competitors like Samsung and Sony.
So the real question will be whether LG addresses that issue next month. But regardless, there are sure to be plenty of gawkers.
