From X-Men to The Munsters

We recently reported that The Munsters are officially coming back to television, rebooted, as they say, for a more modern audience. The producer bringing the Munsters back is none other than Bryan Fuller, who created the show Pushing Daisies, and who’s also working on a network show about Hannibal Lecter.

The Munsters is a big potential franchise, so it’s not surprising there’s an effort to bring it back and hopefully make some bucks.

What is surprising is who Deadline reports is going to be on board to direct the pilot: Bryan Singer.

For those who aren’t geek inclined, Bryan Singer’s breakthrough was The Usual Suspects, and he also helmed X-Men I and II, along with the 2006 Superman Returns.

Where many felt his Superman reboot left a lot to be desired, X-Men went a long way in making Hollywood take comic book movies seriously, and we’ve enjoyed much better comic adaptations, and sequels, since.

Of course, this isn’t Singer’s first foray into TV. He’s an executive producer on the series House, and also produced a mini-series about the Bermuda Triangle, called The Triangle, along with ID4’s Dean Devlin. (I also wonder if Rob Zombie, another Munsters fanatic, will direct any episodes, which would seem a natural for him).

So now that the series is apparently up and running, can Singer reinvent the denizens of 1313 Mockingbird Lane as well as he reinvented the comic book movie?

As a hardcore Munsters fan, I’m taking a wait and see attitude on this, much like much of geekdom had their arms crossed in skepticism before X-Men proved us all wrong.
