HBO has released a behind the scenes featurette for the second season of Game of Thrones dubbed “In Production.”
It feels like it’s already been a long wait for the second season of Game of Thrones, but we’ve still got almost five more months before we get to see the events of the second book of the Song of Ice and Fire depicted on HBO.
Because of this relatively huge gap, we’re probably going to start seeing a plethroa of high-quality promotional material in the interim. Yes, HBO launched a title trailer a month or so ago, but IMHO, that doesn’t really count. But now that some of the production is complete, HBO’s marketing department actually has something to work with.
The first footage of the second season comes in the form of a behind-the scenes video which appeared on HBO’s website (a few minor spoilers ahead).
We get to see a glimps of some of our favorite characters from last season.
Arya Stark is in flight from King’s Landing in a disguise of sorts. In this scene, we can infer that there is obviously trouble on the road.
Tyrion (played expertly by Peter Dinklage) stumbles a bit drunkenly, Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) crouches in the snow with a determined look on his face and explores beyond the wall with Samwell Tarly (John Bradley), and Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony) wears a crown.
The only new face I was able to pickout with certainty from the clips shown is Natalie Dormer, who is decked out in the costume of Margaery Tyrell.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss provided some commentary about how the second season will be different from a production perspective and for the audience, of course.
“One of the great challenges with the second season is the world just expanded enormously,” says Benioff in the video. “Not only do we introduce a great number of new characters, but we’re journeying to all new locations.”
The new season of Game of Thrones kicks off in April on HBO.
