Attack the Block debuted earlier this year to massive UK audiences. Although it hasn’t seen a general (theater) release in the US yet, the creators of the widely lauded film are already talking about future use of the franchise.
The charming movie depicts the small-scale alien invasion of a poor, crime-ridden neighborhood in South London, and the street kids who rise up to fight them off. Some of the ideas are coming from John Boyega, one of the stars of the film.
“[Boyega] keeps coming up with amazing ideas,” said Attack the Block Director Joe Cornish.
“He has this image of a bigger alien attack on London, as if the attack we saw in Attack the Block was just the [first] wave and there’s another wave of bigger creatures.
“And he described to me this image of Moses leading a whole army of hood kids across the Thames, next to the houses of Parliament. No, his image was even better. He had an image of Moses on a police horse. You know the police in London who have those horses they use in riots…somehow Moses has got onto one of those horses. So he’s on a horse leading this army of South London kids across the river to take on this bigger wave of aliens. So yeah it’s really fun to think of stuff like that and what we could do.”
Cornish went on to say that they have been approached by studios and investors with ideas for several different projects, one of which is an American remake, which would put the same plot into an American city with American kids, to make the film more relatable for an American audience. There is also the possibility of a television show, or just a straight-up sequel to the original film.
The film has received a devoted following among its fans, who call themselves Blockheads, and express a strong interest in the deepening of the story’s mythology.
Attack the Block, which stars Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, Luke Treadaway, Adam Leese, Joey Ansah, Flaminia Cinque, and Chris Wilson was released on July 29, 2011 in the UK. It hits U.S. shores via a DVD and Blu-ray release on October 25 , 2011.
