A Blackberry outage that first struck earlier this week has only continued to expand and create another headache for Research in Motion.
It started at the beginning of the week, when customers mostly in the Middle East and sections of Europe were suddenly without access to data connectivity and Blackberry Messenger.
At the time, it was seen as yet another thing for Research in Motion, the company behind the Blackberry brand, to have to fix but because of the geographical area where the problems were, it wasn’t an enormous deal.
Now, though, more countries are beginning to experience outages. Millions of Blackberry users are now without service in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, India, and countries throughout Africa.
In addition, outages continue to expand in the already-affected European and Middle Eastern areas.
TG Daily reporters in the UK have not lost service but received messages from RIM, including this one: “Hi from T-Mobile. We’re sorry, some BlackBerry customers are still experiencing problems with sending & receiving emails, browsing the internet & using BlackBerry Messenger. BlackBerry are looking into this urgently and hope to resolve it soon, so there’s no need to get in touch. Thanks for your patience.”
The company says there was a “core switch failure” within its own infrastructure and it has no timeline on when it will be able to fully rectify the problem.
This of course comes as the Blackberry brand is deteriorating every day, even when its service is functioning perfectly. RIM has lost double-digit market share over the last year and there seems to be little it can do to prevent that trend from continuing.
