Digital denizens have apparently kicked off a campaign to spread malware and scareware via automated, unsolicited Skype calls.
”Attention: this is an automated computer system alert. Your computer protection service is not active,” warns a creepy robotic caller.
“To activate computer protection, and repair your computer, go to [LINK].”
As Sophos security expert Graham Cluley notes, the automated Skype calls clearly indicate that cyber criminals are under mounting pressure to craft new social engineering tricks in the hopes of duping the gullible masses.
“If you weren’t aware of fake anti-virus (also known as scareware) scams like this you might well be worried enough to visit the website referred to in the message, where it will pretend to scan your computer’s security,” said Cluley.
“[But] surprise, surprise… The website claims that you are not properly protected – and it urges you to install its software (a steal at $19.95)… They seem to be keen for you to hand over your contact details – including your email address.”
Obviously, you probably wouldn’t want to trust a company which exploits uber-lame Skype spam techniques to advertise its dubious wares.
You may also want to change your privacy settings to block out unsolicited calls, meaning, only those listed in your contact list have permission to contact you.
