At Disney’s recent D23 conference, Bruce Boxleitner, who plays the part of the title character across the franchise, claimed there is a third Tron film in the works.
Also, let’s not forget, Tron: Uprising is due next summer.
There have been rumors for a while that a third Tron film is in the works, but no confirmation. After the relatively poor reception of Legacy (which was awesome), some were doubtful about the status of the film. Last weekend, Boleitner, when asked by a fan with a camera about a third had this to say:
If you missed that, it was “Oh, it’s already a done deal. It’s already in the works, my friend, already in the works. … 2013, I think … Well, it takes a long time to make these things.”
It’s not an official announcement, but does seem to be a pretty reliable source.
No word yet on the title or other actors. Of course, it would be nice to see a return of Olivia Wilde, but I don’t see that happening.
We do have a clue about the plot, however. The extras on the Legacy DVD hinted that Edward Dillinger III, an executive at Encomm, would be the primary villain for the third film.
Also, we’ve had info about Tron: Uprising for about a month. The CGI series takes place between the events of TRON and TRON: Legacy. Canonically, it takes place between the betrayal of CLU which sent Kevin Flynn into exile, and the discovery of the ISOs.
CLU is attempting to rule the grid with the help of General Tesler, who seems to be the main villain for the series – since CLU needs to be dealt with by Sam Flynn later.
Beck is a young program with promise, being trained by Tron, a legendary grid fighter after which the entire franchise is named.
Beck seeks to free his family, and the entire Grid from General Tesler’s tyranny. Soon he becomes the leader of a revolution against the militaristic rule.
The series stars Elijah Wood as Beck, Bruce Boxleitner as Tron, Fred Tatasciore as Kevin Flynn and CLU, and Lance Henricksen as Tesler. A few other well-known names like Mandy Moore and Paul Rubnens are also connected to the project as minor characters.
