Samsung’s latest Android-powered smartphone models will be available next month, but as expected Verizon will not be carrying it.
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, however, are all set to stock the device in the coming weeks. It is Samsung’s goal to make it as much of an iPhone rival as possible, and hopes that by introducing it to multiple carriers it will be able to tout high sales numbers.
“Galaxy S” is the brand name used by Samsung to refer to its high-end Android phones. When it first introduced the name last year, there were several different handsets each referred to as Galaxy S phone. For example, each mobile phone provider offered completely different handsets.
For this latest refresh, however, Samsung has tightened its focus, although there will still be differences between each carrier’s version of the Galaxy S II.
For starters, the Sprint version will have an entirely different name – the Epic 4G Touch. In addition, the AT&T version has a 4.3-inch display while T-Mobile and Sprint will both get a 4.52-inch phone. The batteries will also slightly vary in size.
However, all versions will have a 1.2 GHz Exynos CPU, 16 GB of built-in storage capacity, and the latest version of Android’s smartphone OS, version 2.3 (“Gingerbread”).
It will also be 4G-enabled across all platforms, with the Sprint version running on the Wimax standard, and both T-Mobile and AT&T using HSPA+.
Sprint has confirmed pricing of the device to be set at $200 and has a solid release date of September 16, while the other two have not yet firmed up details. It should be expected that both AT&T and T-Mobile will have similar if not identical prices.
