Lucent says it has created a breakthrough technology using microscopic mirrors to provide a tenfold increase in Internet connection speeds.
Lucent plans to use the technology to create a router capable of delivering 10 terabits of data per second – 10 times that of rival products. Called the WaveStar LambdaRouter, the product could effectively transmit the printed contents of whole libraries in a single second. The high-capacity, all-optical router uses a series of microscopic mirrors to instantly route optical signals from fiber to fiber in a network, without first converting the signals to electrical form.
The first release of the WaveStar LambdaRouter will occur in July 2000, with volume availability to follow in December 2000.
