Computer experts warned against what could be the most destructive Love Bug copycat yet – an e-mail posing as a fix for the virus from security firm Symantec.
The e-mail appears with the subject header “VIRUS ALERT!!!” and begins, “Dear Symantec customer.” It includes an malicious attachment called “protect.vbs.”
Analysts say the files targeted by the new variant are vital system files, including batch files (.bat) and comand files (.com).
So far, antivirus firms have identified at least seven variants of the original virus that wreaked havoc this week on computer systems worldwide.
