Fuel cells made with chip fabrication technology may revolutionize handheld and portable computing by radically extending “battery” life. Fuel cells can, according to researchers, be made smaller than conventional batteries but with far more power storage. Easily recharged fuel cells draw chemicals stored outside the generating device and draw more as needed. One researcher says that the best conventional batteries, lithium ion cells, have only one tenth the capacity that fuel cell the same size will have.
