Top colleges reject Napster ban

Following the preliminary ruling against the Napster file-sharing service, approximately a third of all US universities decided to block access through their ISPs to the system. Attorneys for Metallica and Dr. Dre, hoping to accelerate the trend, sent requests to top universities asking them to do the same. Many have subsequently refused to block access, citing the need for a free flow of information. Schools who have announced they are declining to ban Napster use include UC Berkeley, UCLA, Duke, Georgia Institute of Technology, the U. of Michigan, MIT, the U. of North Carolina, Princeton and Stanford.
