The Wi-Fi Alliance said it is close to releasing the final spec for wi-fi devices to connect directly to each other.
The specification is aimed at allowing peripherals including notebooks, netbooks, cameras, printers, keyboards and headphones to make one-to-one connections.
Chipset company Marvell said today it will support Wi-Fi Direct in devices it makes for mobile phones, while a number of other players will also endorse the specification.
Products will have to be certified as Direct compatible but will also be able to connect to legacy devices too.
Certification will begin in 2010.
Wi-Fi Alliance director Edgar Figueroa said: “Wi-Fi users worldwide will benefit from a single technology to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily among devices, even when a Wi-Fi access point isn’t available.”
