NY State installs suicide prevention phones on bridge

Tarrytown (NY) – New York state officials are turning to technology to give would-be suicide jumpers some hope.  The state’s Thruway Authority has installed “anti-suicide” phones on the Tappan Zee bridge which spans the Hudson River.  The phones connect to suicide prevention counselors who can summon police or medical help.

A sign above each phone reads, “When it seems like there is no hope, there is help.”

More than 25 people have jumped to their deaths from the Tappan Zee Bridge in the past decade.
