IBM launches open source initiative in emerging countries

International Business Machines Corp. Monday extended its effort to undercut Microsoft Corp.’s influence with new initiatives focused on winning over developers and software companies in emerging markets to its technology.

IBM unveiled programs aimed at attracting software programmers and fledgling software companies in countries such as China, India, Russia and Brazil. These economies represent about 25% of the world’s software developers, and that ratio is seen climbing to 27% by 2008, according to IBM.
