Alienware today announced the availability of the MJ-12 7550a with Windows XP Pro x64 as operating system option. According to the company, other desktop computers will follow and will become available with the 64-bit OS.
The new workstation version offers theoretical support of up to 128 GByte of memory and is equipped with single AMD Opteron 242 (1.6 GHz) processor, 1 GByte DDR memory, an Nvidia Quadro FX 330 graphics card, a DVD-ROM, and a 80 GByte SATA harddrive in standard configuration. Pricing starts at about $1600 with Windows XP Pro x64 being offered as a free option instead of the 32-bit version.
Alienware also has begun offering its Aurora 7500 and ALX systems with AMD’s latest gaming processor, the Athlon 64 FX-57. Since the FX-57 is priced in a stratospheric region, the systems don’t come cheap. Choosing an FX-57 instead of the standard dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is a $592 option, bringing the base price of the 7500 to about $2600. Optioned out – including dual Geforce 7800 GTX cards for an extra $1000 – the system will top $4400. (THG)
