Facebook’s teamed up with Miramax to launch an app allowing users to stream movies for as little as $3 a pop.
The app, which went live in beta yesterday, offers 20 titles in the US, but only 10 in the UK and Turkey because of rights issues. French and German versions are to be added soon. Movies available incude Chicago, Good Will Hunting, Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction.
“Our goal with the Miramax App is to offer consumers a great user experience where they can watch movie clips and feature length films, play games and share the experience with their friends within the Facebook community,” says CEO Mike Lang.
“The Miramax eXperience integrates into user profiles and news feeds and will hopefully become a part of the fabric of many discussions. It was important to us that Facebook users could easily invite and interact with their friends, by leveraging the social graph via games and other features such as enabling friends to ‘like’ movies”
The app works on a range of devices, including a PC, iPad or TV. each costs 30 Facebook credits – $3 – to rent. Users have access to the movie for 30 days, but once they’ve started watching it they have to make it through to the credits within 48 hours or it expires.
In the longer term, says Miramax, the aim is to allow users to buy as well as rent movies, storing them in their own cloud-based digital locker for access on any device.
It’s not the first time movies have been made available on Facebook – Warner Bros, Paramount and Universal have all made similar initiatives – but it is the biggest, and, if it’s a success, it could encourage other movie studios to do the same.
“We encourage our industry peers to join us in this vision – including the other great digital retailers and technology companies of the world,” says Lang.
“The time is now to make cloud-based movie ownership a reality for consumers.”
