Microsoft Windows 7 to cost $30 for students

If you’re a student in the United States, you’ll only have to pay $30 for Windows 7, Microsoft has said.

To get the upgrade, you can download it after October 22nd, when Windows 7 ships, and will need a valid college email address.

If you’re a student in the UK, it will cost you £30, which doesn’t seem very equitable.

Microsoft isn’t charging extra in the UK to recoup the cost of the fine it’s had to pay the European Commission. It always translates $ into £, like many another vendor does too.

If you ask Microsoft why it costs so much more to buy Windows 7 in Europe compared to the US, it cites import tax and has even been known to mention shipping.

But as it has several fulfilment centers based in Europe, this one doesn’t really wash.

It charges the extra money because it can.
