Chicago (IL) – An earlier posting made approximately six months ago by “Markham” on the Alliance@IBM job cuts page said January 23, 2009 would be the day 16,000 IBM workers worldwide would be laid off. Several posters are makings posts this week stating either that they or their entire division have been laid off. This has renewed concerns and beliefs that massive jobs cuts are coming at IBM.
Alliance@IBM is a union, Local 1701. It serves as a place of gathering for IBM employees who wish to bond together and support one another while being employed by IBM. Other large corporations have similar entities, including (an apparently now defunct) FACE Intel (Former And Current Employees of Intel). The following is Alliance@IBM’s statement of principles, according to their front page:
“Statement of Principles:
Alliance@IBM/CWA Local 1701 is an IBM employee organization that is dedicated to preserving and improving our rights and benefits at IBM. We also strive towards restoring management’s respect for the individual and the value we bring to the company as employees. Our mission is to make our voice heard with IBM management, shareholders, government and the media. While our ultimate goal is collective bargaining rights with IBM, we will build our union now and challenge IBM on the many issues facing employees from off-shoring and job security to working conditions and company policy.”
Other websites are predicting that January 23 will be the day IBM notifies. Some posts on Alliance@IBM as recent as yesterday are included here:

There are dozens of other similar posts making claims like these. Many of them indicate either their jobs or those of their colleagues have already been lost. Most give an effective date of February 23, 2009 as their last day. If IBM were to notify officially, the time period of one month would seem appropriate notification. The original posting my “Markham” (nearly six months ago) also said January 23 would be the official notification day.
