The Wall Street Journal article has updated its language. It now says “Microsoft Corp. is seriously exploring significant work force reductions that could be announced as early as next week, in a sign that the weak economy is prompting tough decisions even at one of the steadiest ships in the technology industry.”
Several websites and blogs have speculated since early January about possible layoffs. A Yahoo! Finance article from Tuesday says the layoff day will be January 22, 2009. A video on that article estimates that Microsoft could be laying off 17% of its total global workforce.
