UPDATED: Nvidia takes gaming into full-3D with stereoscopic glasses

Las Vegas (NV) – Today, Nvidia unveiled 3D Vision for GeForce. Designed to operate wirelessly with high speed shutters and selected 120 Hz frequency monitors, the gaming, photo and movie industry can now go fully 3D out of the box with little or no modification.

The system works with “the new pure Samsung and ViewSonic 120 Hz LCD monitors, Mitsubishi DLP HDTVs, and the DepthQ HD 3D Projector by Lightspeed Design, Inc.”

It does not use polarized light. Instead, a sequence of high-speed LCD shutters in the required glasses alternate via a timed sequence with images as they’re displayed on the monitor. This fast on/off action causes the left and right eyes to see different vantage points at 60 images per second, making games look completely 3D. Nvidia’s Stereoscopic 3D engine allows games, photos and movies to utilize the ability out of the box.

The glasses are triggered by a high-power IR emitter which allows operations up to 20 feet away. It is connected via a USB port.

Nvidia’s Steroscopic 3D software can make over 300 games work in true 3D directly out of the box without any game patches or updates. According to the press release, “Nvidia software automatically converts over 300 games to work in 3D stereo out of the box, without the need for special game patches. In addition, Nvidia’s ‘The Way It’s Meant to Be Played’ program ensures that future games will support 3D Vision. 3D Vision is also the only stereoscopic 3D gaming solution to fully support Nvidia SLI, Nvidia PhysX, and Microsoft DirectX 10 technologies.”

The glasses use a USB connection for recharging. Nvidia says 40 hours of continuous operation per charge. The glasses will automatically shut off after 10 minutes of inactivity to save the battery.

3D Vision for GeForce is available starting today from leading U.S. e-tailers including,,; as well as direct from for a suggested price of $199. Worldwide availability will be announced in the first quarter.

Nvidia has published several testimonials on the new technology at the end of their press release.
