Taipei (Taiwan) – The Taipei Times is reporting Taiwan’s exports are at record lows, indicating how strong the global economic recession is. Semiconductor shipments in December alone dropped by 43.4%, while LCD panels fell 69.2% and related mineral products dropped by 61.6%.

Said Lin Lee-jen, head of Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance, “The ministry is shocked at the magnitude of declines.”

Shipments to China (including Hong Kong) are down 54% ($5.2 billion). Exports to the United States have decreased 23.5% ($2.2 billion) while exports to Europe and Japan are down 29.5% and 21.5%, respectively.
