Chicago (IL) – During the Olympics, Chinese authorities were a little more lenient as to the web sites that were able to be viewed in China. Now we are seeing some changes again. Access to the New York Times website from Mainland China has been blocked.
On Friday morning, when computer users in areas such as Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai made attempts to view the New York Times website, they only saw a message that the site was not available.
This comes after many other sites such as BBC, Voice of America, and Asiaweek were also blocked earlier in the week. These sites were accessible again by Friday.
There was no clear explanation why access to the New York Times was blocked. In fact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing told the Times that they did not have all of the details. An official with the International Press Center in Beijing told the Times that the restriction could simply be a technical problem.
There is no information concerning whether or not the restrictions will be lifted.
