Port Washington (NY) – The PS3 had one of its best months in February, selling over 280,000 units. That barely edges out the Xbox 360’s sales numbers, but is only around half of the number of Wii units sold in the same time period.
In February, NPD reports that the Wii was unsurprisingly the top console seller, reaching 432,000 units. The PS3’s 280,800 units put it in the number two spot, with the Xbox 360 reaching 254,600 units.
These numbers are US sales, and for the PS3 and Xbox 360 they are about on par with January’s figures. However, the Wii catapulted from 274,000 units in January. In fact, the PS3 was only 5,000 units shy of overtaking the Wii in the first month of 2008.
Despite new hardware not accelerating as quickly for the Xbox 360, it managed to take credit for the top two games of 2008. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hit the top with 296,200 units sold, followed closely by the Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, at 295,200.
Wii Play, which has been on the top 10 list nearly every month since it came out around a year ago, was third with 289,700. The PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4 was fourth at 233,500, and the Wii version of Guitar Hero III rounded out the top five with 222,900 units sold.
The DS, meanwhile, once again outsold all platforms, reaching 587,600 units in the US. The PSP was far behind at 243,000. The PS2 also continued to have strong sales, with 351,800 units sold in February.
